Scarlett Johansson’s 4 Beauty Rules

Scarlett Johansson’s 4 Beauty Rules

“It’s all about balance, and that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to choose one thing over the other,” says Scarlett Johansson, speaking not of her varied movie roles but rather of her anything-goes evening-makeup philosophy. “Sometimes it’s nice just to be minimal and be fresh, and other times you can wear a red dress and red lipstick and it looks great.” On her first red carpet, in 1997, at age 12— she wore a chocolate-latte-colored lip to the Independent Spirit Awards—Johansson established her perfect big-night-out recipe: heavy on the Old Hollywood, with just a dash of rock ‘n’ roll. These days, when pressed for time before a big event, “I take off my concealer under the eye, a little around my nose, and refresh those areas with new foundation,” she says. And then she adds her signature: “I always carry a red lipstick,” Johansson says. “You never know when you’ll need it.” Here, her best beauty tips and tricks.

Smoke and Mirrors

Johansson grounded icy-teal shadow with heavy black liner. “Use your brushes dry if you want color to be softer,” she says. “Or wet your brushes if you want defined color. I go through periods where I like to apply everything with a brush—the trick is to make sure they are really clean.”

Mix Master

For her debut as the face of Dolce & Gabbana, Johansson teamed up with makeup pro Pat McGrath. “I had fiery hair, and we did a red lip with a smoky eye,” Johansson says. “I think it was the first time I was like, ‘Is this too much?’ But I realized that a strong lip and a strong eye don’t have to be mutually exclusive.”

Red Alert

Johansson recommends lining the mouth with concealer around the outside and pencil over the entire lip before applying intense shades. “Some people put a color corrector around the lips if their lipstick bleeds,” she says. “If you really want to go for it, rim the lips with a highlighter. That’s very dramatic.”

Center Stage

Johansson prefers to do her own makeup—except when attending major galas—so when she performed onstage at the Coachella music festival, she stuck to her DIY routine. “I’m not particularly high maintenance. This wasn’t really work—it was pleasure,” she says. “Day to day, I like to wear some sort of tinted moisturizer, mascara, and maybe a bronzer.”
